What Claude Design Is (and Isn't)

2 min readClaude Design for DesignersUpdated Sep 17, 2026

Claude Design is Anthropic's AI collaborator for visual work, prototypes, slides, decks, one-pagers, mockups. You describe what you need; Claude builds a first version in its canvas, and you refine it together through chat, inline comments, or direct edits. You choose which Claude model powers your work from the Model selector in the prompt bar, and it's currently in Beta. Since September 2026 Claude Design lives in two places at once, and knowing which is which saves a wasted session. The standalone app at claude.ai/design is your library: every project you have made, your design systems, and a dozen starting templates. New Design work is created as an artifact inside a Claude conversation, alongside Docs and Slides. The library holds what you own; the artifact is where you build.

What it's good at

  • Turning a rough idea into a clickable HTML prototype without writing code
  • Producing on-brand pitch decks from a bulleted outline, though Claude Slides is now the more direct route (see Lesson 11)
  • Exploring three layout directions before you commit to one
  • Converting a written spec into a shareable mockup
  • Extracting your existing design system from code or Figma so every new project matches

What it isn't

  • A replacement for Figma's multi-file collaboration or advanced vector editing
  • A general-purpose AI chatbot, it's scoped to visual and design work
  • A finished-design generator, outputs are first drafts meant for refinement

Who can use it today

Claude Pro
Included. Since the mid-2026 update, Claude Design draws from your shared Claude usage limits, the same pool as chat, Claude Code, and Cowork, rather than a separate, smaller allowance.
Claude Max
Included, with higher shared limits.
Claude Team
Included, designers can set up an organization-wide design system that every project inherits.
Claude Enterprise
Off by default. An organization admin enables it in Organization settings → Capabilities → Anthropic Labs.
Beta, not GA

Features, limits, and availability can change. Anthropic has called out some known gaps: comment persistence issues, save errors in compact view (switch to full view), lag with very large repositories, and no data residency or audit log support yet.

You know what Claude Design is for

  • Understood the scope, design-focused, not a general AI chat
  • Checked which plan tier gives you access
  • Noted the beta caveats

Next up: writing your first prompt so the first output is actually useful.
