What Claude Design Is (and Isn't)
2 min readClaude Design for DesignersUpdated Apr 21, 2026
Claude Design is Anthropic's AI collaborator for visual work, prototypes, slides, decks, one-pagers, mockups. You describe what you need; Claude builds a first version in its canvas, and you refine it together through chat, inline comments, or direct edits. It's powered by Claude Opus 4.7 and currently in research preview.
What it's good at
- Turning a rough idea into a clickable HTML prototype without writing code
- Producing on-brand pitch decks from a bulleted outline
- Exploring three layout directions before you commit to one
- Converting a written spec into a shareable mockup
- Extracting your existing design system from code or Figma so every new project matches
What it isn't
- A replacement for Figma's multi-file collaboration or advanced vector editing
- A general-purpose AI chatbot, it's scoped to visual and design work
- A finished-design generator, outputs are first drafts meant for refinement
Who can use it today
- Claude Pro
- Included, with monthly usage limits.
- Claude Max
- Included, with higher limits.
- Claude Team
- Included, designers can set up an organization-wide design system that every project inherits.
- Claude Enterprise
- Off by default. An organization admin enables it in Organization settings → Capabilities → Anthropic Labs.
Research preview, not GA
Features, limits, and availability can change. Anthropic has called out some known gaps: comment persistence issues, save errors in compact view (switch to full view), lag with very large repositories, and no data residency or audit log support yet.
Primary sources
You know what Claude Design is for
- Understood the scope, design-focused, not a general AI chat
- Checked which plan tier gives you access
- Noted the research-preview caveats
Next up: writing your first prompt so the first output is actually useful.
